Tragedy in Whitstable: Toddler Killed as Car Ploughs into Family

Two-Year-Old Sonny Macdonald Fatally Hit

Two-year-old Sonny Macdonald has died after a horrific crash in Whitstable, England. The tot was in his pram when a car lost control and slammed into his family on Cromwell Road on Saturday, 16 August.

Sonny’s parents were pushing him along after a trip to Whitstable beach when the driver, turning from Harbour Street into Cromwell Road, “lost control” of the vehicle. The car struck the family, seriously injuring Sonny’s father before crashing through a metal barrier.

Car Plunges into Gorrell Tank Car Park

The out-of-control vehicle hurtled about six feet into the Gorrell Tank car park, dragging Sonny with it. Despite the swift arrival of paramedics, Sonny was pronounced dead at the scene at approximately 8:24pm.

Coroner Katrina Hepburn said: “His mother and father witnessed his death, which occurred at approximately 8.24pm. They were walking back from Whitstable beach from the harbour with Sonny, who was in a pushchair.”

Sonny’s devastated father was rushed to hospital with serious injuries.

Man Arrested Over Death by Dangerous Driving

A man in his 20s was arrested at the crash scene on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving. He has since been released on bail pending further enquiries. The inquest at Oakwood House in Maidstone has been suspended while Kent Police continue their investigation.

Community Mourns, Police Seek Witnesses

The crash site is now a shrine of floral tributes, teddies, and heartfelt messages. Firefighters who responded with three engines have also paid their respects.

Local MP Rosie Duffield said: “I was shocked and very saddened to hear about the horrific incident in Whitstable. I cannot begin to imagine what the family of the little boy who lost his life must be going through. My thoughts are with them and all caught up in this awful tragedy.”

Canterbury City Council, which manages the Gorrell Tank car park, has expressed its condolences to Sonny’s family.
