Four Dead After Explosion at Avonmouth Waste Plant

Tragedy struck at the Waste Treatment Works in Avonmouth, near Bristol, as four people died during maintenance work atop a lime silo. Emergency services rushed to the scene after a powerful blast threw workers a significant distance from the explosion site.

Rescue Efforts and Investigation Underway

Three victims were Wessex Water employees, and the fourth was a contractor. Rescue teams from Avon Fire and Rescue, including specialist USAR units and search dogs, were deployed to recover those affected. A fifth person was injured and taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

The Health and Safety Executive has launched a full investigation in collaboration with Avon and Somerset Police. Early indications suggest a dust explosion—a rapid combustion of fine particles in the air—may be to blame.

Police and Officials Respond to Disaster

Avon and Somerset Police spokesman: “Emergency services were called at around 11.20am following a large explosion involving a chemical tank at Wessex Water’s Bristol recycling centre. Despite our best efforts, four people have sadly died, including three Wessex Water employees and one contractor. Our thoughts are with their families whom we have contacted.”

Chief Inspector Mark Runacres added: “This is a tragic incident. We’re supporting the families at this difficult time. A thorough multi-agency investigation is underway, but we can confirm this is not terror-related. The explosion occurred in a silo containing treated biosolids destined for reuse as an organic soil conditioner.”

He urged locals to avoid the area while emergency operations continue but reassured residents that no ongoing public safety risks are expected.

Wessex Water Expresses Devastation

Wessex Water CEO Colin Skellett said: “We are absolutely devastated by today’s tragic incident resulting in four fatalities. Our thoughts are with everyone affected. We are working closely with the Health and Safety Executive to understand what happened and why.”

The investigation into this deadly blast continues as authorities work to uncover the exact cause and prevent future disasters.
