Tragedy in Gateshead: Layton Carr, just 14, died in a devastating fire at Fairfield Industrial Park, Bill Quay. The blaze erupted shortly after 8pm on Friday, 2 May 2025, leaving the community in shock.
Fourteen Kids Arrested Over Fatal Fire
In a dramatic twist, police have arrested 14 youths aged 11 to 14 on suspicion of manslaughter in connection with Layton’s death. The group includes 11 boys and three girls, all still in custody as officers probe the heartbreaking case.
“Forever 14” – Heartfelt Tributes Pour In
Social media lit up with tearful tributes for Layton. Loved ones called him a “beautiful soul.”
“My boy, my baby cousin, my Layton. Nothing will ever come close to the pain I feel right now. Forever 14. I’ll miss you sausage.”
A close family friend, Stephanie Simpson, has set up a GoFundMe to cover funeral costs, saying:
“The last thing Georgia needs is to stress about funeral costs for her boy.”
Ongoing Police Investigation
The scene at Fairfield Industrial Park remains sealed off with a large police cordon. Known for previous break-ins, the disused site is now under intense forensic scrutiny. Uniformed officers patrol regularly.
Detective Chief Inspector Louise Jenkins called the incident “extremely heartbreaking” and urged the public to respect the family’s privacy.
Police described Layton as 5ft 6ins tall with short brown hair, wearing a black Under Armour cap, dark grey Berghaus puffa jacket, black tracksuit bottoms, a grey t-shirt, and black and grey Nike 95 trainers.
The investigation continues with support from the Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service.
