Armed Police Shoot 39-Year-Old Knifeman Dead After Five-Hour Standoff on Christmas Eve

A 39-year-old man was shot dead by armed police following a tense five-hour standoff in Redditch, Worcestershire, on Christmas Eve.

West Mercia Police confirmed that officers were called to an address in Fownhope Close at approximately 2pm by West Midlands Ambulance Service after concerns were raised for the safety of a man armed with a knife.

A police negotiator was dispatched, and officers engaged with the man for several hours in an attempt to de-escalate the situation. However, at around 7:40pm, armed police discharged their firearms. Despite immediate efforts to save him, the man was pronounced dead shortly after 8pm.

No one else was in the property at the time of the incident.

Assistant Chief Constable Grant Wills expressed his condolences:

“This is a tragic incident, and our thoughts are with everyone affected at this difficult time.

We do not underestimate the shock and concern this may cause the local community, and I want to reassure residents that we are following all appropriate procedures. This included making an immediate referral to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC), as is mandatory and right.

We will fully support their investigation, including providing all information we hold, such as body-worn camera footage.

West Mercia Police has stated that the IOPC will now lead the investigation, and no further comments can be made at this time.

The incident has left the community in shock as local authorities work to address the situation. Residents are urged to remain calm and await further updates from the ongoing investigation.

The IOPC will examine the actions of officers involved to ensure full transparency and accountability in the handling of the case.
