Every year, the UK marks Windrush Day on June 22, commemorating the arrival of the HMT Empire Windrush and celebrating the significant contributions of the Caribbean migrants who journeyed to Britain 76 years ago. These individuals, known as the ‘Windrush generation,’ played a vital role in rebuilding the nation post-World War II.
On June 22, 1948, the HMT Empire Windrush docked at Tilbury Docks in Essex, carrying over 800 passengers from the Caribbean. These migrants answered Britain’s call to fill labour shortages and contribute to the nation’s recovery and growth in the post-war era. This historic arrival marked the beginning of the Windrush generation’s story in the UK.
