Over 100 Homes Evacuated in Grimethorpe Following Police Operation

In the former pit village of Grimethorpe, Barnsley, more than 100 homes have been evacuated after an Army bomb squad was deployed in response to a police operation. The tense situation unfolded after South Yorkshire Police established a 100-metre cordon around a property on Brierley Road, where “several suspicious items” were discovered during the execution of a warrant.

Residents in the affected area were swiftly evacuated, with authorities cautioning that they might be displaced for up to 48 hours. Barnsley Council opened a rest centre at St. Luke’s Church to accommodate households without alternative accommodation options. Emergency services have mobilized to manage the situation, ensuring the safety and well-being of all residents.

A 58-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of offences under the Firearms Act, and he remains in police custody. The police have urged evacuated residents to pack essential items, including medication and arrangements for pets, as they prepare for potential displacement.

Assistant Chief Constable David Hartley expressed gratitude for the patience and cooperation of local residents, emphasizing that public safety remains the top priority throughout the investigation. He also acknowledged the collaborative efforts between law enforcement and the community, highlighting the resilience and unity displayed during challenging times.

Leader of Barnsley Council, Sir Steve Houghton, echoed the importance of following police guidance to ensure the safety of individuals and families. He reassured residents that the council is working closely with the police to provide support and assistance during this period of uncertainty.

As the investigation progresses, authorities continue to work diligently to address the situation and ensure the safety of the community. Updates will be provided as the situation unfolds, with a focus on maintaining transparency and keeping residents informed every step of the way.
