Firefighters in Shropshire carried out a specialist animal rescue this morning after a horse became trapped in thick mud.

Crews were called at 8:14am on Sunday 24th August 2025  to reports of a 25-year-old mare, named Caramel, stuck fast at the edge of a dried-up pond.

Specialist Rescue Operation

Teams from Amber Watch, White Watch Wellington, and Telford Central attended the scene.

Using specialist equipment – including rescue strops and a HIAB crane mounted on the Rescue Tender – firefighters were able to carefully lift Caramel onto solid ground.

A vet was present throughout to monitor the animal’s condition and ensure her safety during the operation.

Once freed, Caramel was able to stand unaided and was gently led back to her field.

A spokesperson for Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service confirmed the rescue ended successfully:

“Thanks to the teamwork and use of specialist equipment, Caramel was safely recovered. We’re pleased to report she is now back on her feet and recovering well.”

Hot Weather Hazard

The Service highlighted that the recent spell of hot and dry weather had caused the pond to dry up, leaving dangerous areas of deep mud that can easily trap large animals.
