Residents in Edenbridge are being urged to remain vigilant following reports that a woman has been approaching elderly shoppers in the Waitrose car park, allegedly demanding money under false pretences.

The alarming incident reportedly took place earlier this week when the woman approached a couple in their 90s, requesting £20 for “gas and electric”. A concerned bystander intervened, at which point the suspect fled the scene.

Suspect Allegedly Active Throughout the Week

According to multiple social media accounts, this is not an isolated incident. Locals claim the woman has been frequenting the area, targeting elderly or vulnerable individuals. Waitrose staff have also reportedly confirmed that she has been seen at the location on several occasions.

Community Response and Warnings Issued

The incident has triggered widespread concern among local residents and social media users, many of whom have praised those who stepped in to protect the elderly couple.

In light of these events, the community is sharing safety advice to help prevent similar encounters:

  • Stay alert, especially in car parks and public areas.
  • Report suspicious behaviour immediately to store staff or authorities.
  • Advise elderly relatives not to engage with strangers asking for money.

Authorities Encouraged to Investigate

While there has been no official police statement at this time, residents are strongly encouraged to report any similar activity to prevent further incidents.

Anyone who witnesses suspicious behaviour or believes they may have been approached in a similar way is urged to contact Kent Police on 101, or to report anonymously via Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

This ongoing concern serves as a reminder to look out for our vulnerable neighbours and ensure the community remains a safe and secure place for all.
