Detectives leading the search for wanted sexual predator Richard Scatchard are urging anyone with information to come forward as the investigation reaches its one-month mark. Scatchard was last captured on CCTV in West Somerset on Monday, October 16.
Despite around 80 reported sightings from individuals assisting with the investigation, none of these sightings since October 16 have been confirmed as Scatchard.
Scatchard is wanted on a recall to prison, and the police also wish to speak to him regarding a murder enquiry. The incident involves the death of 61-year-old Kelly Faiers at Scatchard’s home in Minehead on Sunday, October 15.
Considered a risk to the public, particularly women he forms relationships with, the 70-year-old Scatchard is known to use dating apps and has previous convictions for sexual offences involving administering drugs to his victims.
The events leading up to October 16 indicate that Kelly and Scatchard, who were in a relationship, were seen together at The Duke of Wellington pub in Minehead on the evening of Saturday, October 14. CCTV footage shows them having a drink together.
In the early hours of the following morning, Scatchard called the ambulance service to his home in Blenheim Road due to Kelly’s critical condition. Unfortunately, she was pronounced deceased at the scene by medics. Police were then called by the ambulance service, and officers spoke with Scatchard before leaving the scene.
On Monday, October 16, when authorities wanted to question Scatchard further, they discovered his property was empty.
Scatchard was initially considered missing until new information led to a wanted appeal. It is believed that Scatchard spent the night of October 15-16 in the Watchet area, where he used to visit regularly. The last confirmed sighting of Scatchard on CCTV was at around 09.00 in the Swain Street area of Watchet.
Despite receiving over 80 calls and online reports of potential sightings, all reported sightings have either been discounted or lack sufficient evidence to confirm they were Scatchard. The majority of these sightings were reported in the West Somerset area, but authorities are mindful that he may have travelled elsewhere in the country.
Support from the National Crime Agency has aided the search for Scatchard, with specialist advice provided to develop search plans. The Major Crime Investigation Team is now leading the inquiries into Kelly’s death.
Detective Superintendent Gary Haskins, the Senior Investigating Officer, expressed the need for answers in Kelly’s case and urged the public to assist in the search for Scatchard. He emphasised the importance of any information that could lead to Scatchard’s apprehension, encouraging individuals to call 999 if they have relevant information.
Scatchard is described as a white man approximately 5ft 11ins tall, with a Scottish accent. If sighted, the public is advised not to approach him but to instead call 999 and provide the reference number 5223259285. If aware of his potential whereabouts, individuals should call 101 and provide the same reference number or complete the online appeals form.
