A fresh University of Brighton graduate is shaking up Burgess Hill with a boxing club that’s about more than just throwing punches. Lisa Houston, who earned her Accounting and Finance degree in 2026, has co-founded South Downs Amateur Boxing Club—a buzzing new hotspot for inclusion, youth action, and community spirit.
Boxing for Everyone, Not Just the Pros
Lisa and veteran coach Shaun Stepney, with 20+ years’ combined experience and England Boxing Level 2 qualifications, are keeping the gloves up for diversity. Their club welcomes everyone—from five-year-olds and teens to women-only sessions and even people living with Parkinson’s. It’s all about smashing barriers and making sport open to all.
More Than Just a Workout: Fighting Off Crime and Isolation
It’s not just about fitness. In partnership with Burgess Hill Police, the club backs the “Reboot” scheme, an early intervention programme aimed at steering youngsters away from crime. Structured workouts, mentorship, and a real sense of belonging are the knockout combo helping teens turn their lives around.
University Support Sparks Big Dreams
Lisa credits the University of Brighton’s student enterprise service, Beepurple, for helping turn her knockout idea into a thriving reality. “Workshops, one-to-one support and startup programmes helped us build a sustainable business,” she says.
Since launching in June 2025, South Downs Amateur Boxing Club has delivered real community punch—boosting mental and physical wellbeing and offering a vital support network.
What’s Next for South Downs ABC?

Lisa’s message to students? “Get stuck in early, gain experience beyond the books, and use every support out there to turn your ideas into reality.” With plans to grow bigger and stronger, this isn’t just a boxing club—it’s a social game-changer.
