A 65-year-old man has been locked up after a terrifying showdown with a paramedic, whom he aimed an imitation gun at, after calling 999 for help himself.

Man Calls 999, Turns on Paramedic With Fake Gun

Clive Monamy, from Hide Gardens, Rustington, rang 999 on May 5, 2024, claiming mental health issues and asking for an ambulance.

But when a South East Coast Ambulance Service paramedic arrived, Monamy greeted them with verbal abuse and refused treatment.

Paramedic Fears For Life As Gun Is Pulled

As the medic was leaving, Monamy suddenly declared, “I have something for you,” then pulled out a black handgun from under a pillow and pointed it right at the paramedic’s face.

Terrified, the paramedic lunged and wrestled the weapon away before escaping and calling the police.

Arrest, Guilty Plea & Jail Sentence

Officers quickly recovered the weapon, later confirmed as a BB gun. Monamy was arrested and charged with possession of an imitation firearm, intending to cause fear of violence.

He pleaded guilty and was sentenced to 20 months in prison at Lewes Crown Court on February 27.

Emergency Workers Targeted: Police & Ambulance Speak Out

Detective Constable Neil Winter stressed the serious impact of the attack.

“Irrespective of his circumstances, this was a serious offence which genuinely caused the victim to fear for his life,” he said. “This sort of behaviour towards emergency workers is totally unacceptable and offenders can expect to be dealt with robustly by the courts.”

David Monk, Security Manager for South East Coast Ambulance Service, added:

“Our frontline staff attend incidents to provide care and compassion, and should never have to face threats or violence on the job. We will always work closely with police to ensure anyone who puts our staff at risk is held fully accountable.”
