A 39-year-old man was shot dead by armed police following a tense five-hour standoff in Redditch, Worcestershire, on Christmas Eve.
No one else was in the property at the time of the incident.

Assistant Chief Constable Grant Wills expressed his condolences:
“This is a tragic incident, and our thoughts are with everyone affected at this difficult time.
We do not underestimate the shock and concern this may cause the local community, and I want to reassure residents that we are following all appropriate procedures. This included making an immediate referral to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC), as is mandatory and right.

We will fully support their investigation, including providing all information we hold, such as body-worn camera footage.
West Mercia Police has stated that the IOPC will now lead the investigation, and no further comments can be made at this time.
