A dramatic break-in at a Morrisons store ended in chaos when a shop thief armed with a crowbar charged at police officers, leading to a violent struggle before officers were able to detain the suspects.
In the early hours of 22 November 2024, Callum Knox, 38, of Avon Road, Southampton, and Damian Smith, 44, of Bullar Road, Southampton, broke into the Morrisons store on The Row in New Ash Green. Both men, wearing balaclavas and wielding crowbars, forced their way into the premises, triggering an intruder alert at 1:40 am.

Police Confront Armed Thieves
Responding swiftly to the alarm, Kent Police patrol officers arrived at the scene to find a member of staff bravely confronting the armed burglars. Officers rushed into the store, issuing commands for the suspects to surrender.
Smith complied with police orders, dropping his crowbar and laying on the ground. However, Knox attempted a dangerous escape. Crowbar raised above his head, he charged toward an exit and a police officer in a bid to flee.
In a tense moment, officers tackled Knox to the ground. Despite being disarmed, Knox violently resisted arrest, leading to a lengthy struggle. He even attempted to grab a police officer’s Taser during the scuffle. Officers eventually managed to restrain and handcuff him.
A key found on the floor during the arrest led officers to the suspects’ getaway car, parked nearby.
Court Sentences: Justice Delivered
Both men were charged with burglary, and Knox faced additional charges for assaulting two emergency workers.
On Thursday, 13 February 2025, at Canterbury Crown Court:
- Callum Knox was sentenced to two years and one month in prison.
- Damian Smith, who had breached a previous suspended sentence, received a harsher penalty of two years and ten months.
