The M40 motorway in Buckinghamshire has been closed in both directions near Oxford following a serious road traffic collision, causing significant disruption for motorists during Monday’s travel hours.
The southbound carriageway is shut between Junction 9 (Bicester) and Junction 8A (Tiddington), while the northbound is closed between Junction 8 (Wheatley) and Junction 9.
Emergency services, including Thames Valley Police and Oxfordshire Fire and Rescue Service, remain on scene, with National Highways Traffic Officers assisting with traffic management and diversion efforts.
Diversion Routes in Place
Motorists travelling southbound are advised to follow the hollow triangle diversion symbol:
- Exit the M40 at J9
- Join the A34 southbound towards Oxford
- At Peartree Roundabout, take the A44 south to the A40 Wolvercote Roundabout
- Continue on the A40 eastbound for approximately 10 miles to re-join the M40 at J8
For northbound travellers, follow the hollow diamond symbol:
- Exit the M40 at J8, joining the A40 westbound
- At the Headington Roundabout, take the A4142 southbound
- At Hinksey Hill Interchange, take the A34 northbound
- Re-join the M40 northbound at J9

National Highways is urging drivers to allow extra travel time, consider re-routing, or even delaying their journey if the closure impacts their planned route.
