A total of 39 people have been deported from Ireland to Georgia following a major immigration operation, authorities confirmed today.
The deportees, all Georgian nationals, were placed on a chartered flight that departed from Dublin Airport on the evening of Wednesday, May 1. The plane landed in Tbilisi, Georgia, early Thursday morning, marking one of the largest coordinated deportation operations in Ireland this year.
The Department of Justice said the operation was carried out in full compliance with Irish and international law and involved individuals whose asylum applications or visa statuses had been definitively refused.
In a statement, a spokesperson for the Department of Justice said:
“The deportation of individuals who have no legal right to remain in the State is a necessary part of an effective immigration system. All appropriate procedures and safeguards were observed throughout this operation.”
Irish immigration officials were assisted by Gardaí from the Garda National Immigration Bureau (GNIB), who managed security and logistics surrounding the removals.
Background:
Ireland, like many European nations, has seen an increase in immigration applications in recent years, with the government facing calls to expedite the processing of claims and to enforce deportations where individuals are found to have no legal right to stay.
Officials emphasized that the individuals involved in the chartered flight had exhausted all available legal appeals and options before the deportation was executed.
