At around 6am on Sunday 22 October 2023, patrols were called to a report of a disturbance in Church Lane, Newington. They attended the scene and after approaching an address following concerns for the welfare of a woman, it is reported four constables were assaulted with one receiving serious facial injuries. The officers were treated by paramedics at the scene, with two requiring subsequent medical attention.

Four men and three women were subsequently arrested on suspicion of assault and public order offences. On the following day, Luke Crowley, of Lowe Road, Canning Town, London was charged with wounding a police officer with intent to prevent the arrest of another and a public order offence. Mr Crowley, aged 32, was remanded in custody to appear before Medway Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday 24 October.
