An American Airlines flight from New York’s JFK Airport to New Delhi was forced to divert to Rome today after a bomb threat was reported mid-flight. The aircraft, Flight AA292, was escorted by Eurofighter Typhoon jets as a precautionary measure before making a safe landing at Rome–Fiumicino Airport.
While operations at the airport resumed shortly after the aircraft landed, heightened security measures remain in place.

Italian law enforcement, in coordination with the FBI and Interpol, has launched an investigation into the origin of the threat. At this time, officials have not disclosed whether the threat was credible or a hoax.
Passenger Accounts
Several passengers took to social media to describe the tense situation onboard. “We were told there was a security issue, but the crew remained calm and professional. It was only when we saw the fighter jets from the window that we realized how serious it was,” wrote one passenger on X (formerly Twitter).
Another traveller posted a video showing the Eurofighter jets escorting the plane through Italian airspace.
Airport Operations Return to Normal
Despite the disruption, Rome–Fiumicino Airport operations quickly normalized. Italian aviation authorities confirmed that flight schedules were largely unaffected, aside from minor delays caused by the emergency landing.
