Teen Held Over Massive Blaze That Forced Leek Residents to Flee
Inferno Engulfs Historic Big Mill
An 18-year-old local lad has been arrested on suspicion of arson after a gigantic fire tore through the iconic Big Mill in Leek, Staffordshire, last night. The six-storey, Grade II-listed building went up in flames so fiercely it lit up the night sky and sent nearby residents running for safety.
Police confirmed the teen is being questioned over reckless arson, with the possibility that lives were put at risk.
Terrified neighbours described a terrifying scene. One witness posted on Facebook: “Can’t believe we came across it as one of the first, shaking like a leaf, horrific!!! The noise was awful!”
Firefighters Wage Battle Through the Night
The alarm was raised at 9:22 pm on Mill Street, with Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service deploying six crews and an aerial ladder platform to tackle the monstrous blaze.
Station Manager Jonathan Ashby warned: “The fire is under control but has yet to be extinguished as crews are unable to enter the building at this time. The large cordon is still in place and we’re expected to be in the area for some time whilst we work to bring the incident to a safe and swift conclusion.”
Parts of the mill have either collapsed or been gutted by the fire. Authorities have shut down A523 Mill Street and Bellevue roads in both directions, causing major traffic chaos and advising the public to steer clear of the area.
Historic Mill’s Fiery Fate
The Big Mill, dating all the way back to 1857, was once home to Wardle & Davenport. This pioneering firm led the way in artificial silk stocking manufacture and provided jobs for up to 2,500 people in its heyday.
Though unoccupied at the time, the mill had planning permission to be turned into 34 flats — a heritage lost in the flames.
A fire service spokesperson urged locals: “Please keep doors and windows closed and avoid the area to allow emergency crews to continue their work.”
Investigation Underway
Police have launched a full investigation into the cause of the blaze. They’re appealing to witnesses or anyone with information to come forward and help with enquiries.
