Police are appealing for help in identifying a motorist whose reckless driving caused an ambulance on a 999 emergency call to swerve off the A339 near Alton, Hampshire, and crash into a ditch. The incident occurred on September 20 at around 11:15 pm, when a white car pulled out in front of the speeding ambulance, forcing it to veer off the road and flip onto its side.
Dash cam footage from the ambulance shows how dangerously close the vehicle came to the white car before swerving to avoid it. The crash caused significant damage to the ambulance, estimated at £26,000, and delayed a critical emergency response. Thankfully, no one was injured in the collision, but the delay was described by Hampshire Constabulary as “considerable and potentially life-threatening” for the patient awaiting emergency care. Another ambulance had to be diverted to attend to the patient.
The white car, believed to be a Ford Fiesta or Focus, did not stop at the scene, and police are now appealing for witnesses or anyone with dashcam footage to come forward. Hampshire Constabulary has released the dash cam footage from the ambulance as part of their investigation and is pursuing multiple lines of enquiry to identify the vehicle and driver responsible.
In a statement, Hampshire and Isle of Wight Constabulary said: “The ambulance was on a blue light run when it was forced off the road, causing a potentially life-threatening delay. We urge the driver involved or anyone with information to come forward.”
Anyone with relevant information, dashcam, or CCTV footage is asked to contact Hampshire Constabulary immediately.
