Bembridge RNLI Launches Heroic Rescue Mission on New Year’s Day

The Bembridge RNLI (Royal National Lifeboat Institution) sprang into action on New Year’s Day, responding to a distress call with remarkable swiftness and expertise. Their dedicated crew launched RNLB Alfred Albert Williams, known as the Tamar All-Weather Lifeboat 16-17, at 6:13 pm in response to a call from the UK (Solent) Coastguard.

The urgent call for assistance came from a 72-foot ex-round-the-world training yacht, which was on its way back to Portsmouth from Poole. The yacht had six crew members on board and had encountered a harrowing situation. They reported engine failure and were taking on water perilously close to Gilkicker Point.

The Gosport & Fareham Inshore Lifeboat was already on the scene when the Bembridge RNLI arrived, and they had efficiently transferred one of their crew members onto the distressed yacht to provide immediate assistance. The combined efforts of both lifeboats demonstrated the strength of the maritime rescue community in times of need.

The RNLB Alfred Albert Williams wasted no time in reaching the troubled yacht. After a careful evaluation of the situation, the decision was made to tow the stricken vessel to safety. Initially destined for Gosport Marina, the destination was later changed to Gunwharf Marina due to evolving circumstances.

The rescue operation unfolded amidst extremely challenging conditions, with Force 7 winds gusting to Force 8 from the west-southwest, accompanied by heavy rainfall. However, the skilled and courageous crew of the RNLB Alfred Albert Williams successfully brought the yacht under tow.

Once they entered Portsmouth Harbour, the towing configuration was adjusted from astern to alongside, ensuring the safe and efficient berthing of the yacht at Gunwharf Marina. This critical manoeuvre ensured the safety of both the yacht and its crew.

The RNLB Alfred Albert Williams, having completed its mission, headed back to Bembridge and was successfully recovered by 8:30 pm. This rapid response and successful rescue operation serve as a testament to the dedication, training, and bravery of the Bembridge RNLI team.

Special recognition and thanks were extended to the Gosport & Fareham Inshore Lifeboat for their initial response and support during this high-stakes rescue. Their collaborative efforts showcased the strong bond within the maritime rescue community.

As we begin the New Year, the heroic efforts of the Bembridge RNLI and their fellow rescuers remind us of the unwavering commitment to saving lives at sea, ensuring that maritime adventures remain as safe as possible for all
