The smash happened around 10am, right in the thick of rush hour. Traffic ground to a halt while crews rushed to the scene to assist and recover the overturned vehicle. Long delays quickly built, frustrating commuters and football fans alike.

Supporters heading to watch Brighton & Hove Albion face Liverpool at the Amex Stadium were caught in the chaos. A police spokesman said:
“Emergency services received a report of a collision approaching the Southerham roundabout on the A27 near Lewes at about 9.30am today.”
Seagulls Travel coaches were running more than an hour late collecting fans. With fans stuck in traffic, match officials pushed back kick-off to 12:45pm to give supporters extra time to arrive.
Disruption Spills onto A259 and Beyond
Drivers trying to avoid the jam on the A27 diverted along the A259 through Newhaven, causing near standstills in the town. Bus services between Brighton and Eastbourne also suffered heavy delays, caught in the gridlock.
The A27 was briefly reopened with one lane but closed again for full recovery of the vehicle. Traffic monitoring service Sussex Travel Watch has now confirmed the A27 is fully open.
Additional Incidents Add to Traffic Woes
In a separate incident, emergency services attended a crash on the A26 between Beddingham and Newhaven. Recovery work continues, and drivers should expect ongoing delays.
