Tragedy at Nuclear Plant: Woman Dies of Meningitis

A female employee at Orano La Hague, a nuclear fuel company in northern France, has died from meningitis. The firm confirmed the death but stressed it’s unrelated to the ongoing meningitis outbreak rocking Kent, UK.

Colleagues in Close Contact Warned

The woman passed away at Cherbourg hospital on March 19. About 50 colleagues who had close contact with her were immediately informed by email. Orano moved fast to alert those at risk.

Strict Safety Crackdown at Work

  • All exposed staff given preventive antibiotics for 48 hours
  • Workers told to isolate at home for 10 days, until March 29
  • Thorough workplace disinfection completed
  • Remote working authorised to limit contact
  • Staff urged to follow strict health precautions

Support and Investigation in Full Swing

Orano’s management offered “deepest condolences” to the victim’s family and colleagues. Psychological help has been available round-the-clock since March 20.

The Manche Prefecture and the Regional Health Agency are involved, coordinating contact tracing carefully. The company added:

“Individuals considered contact cases — those who were less than a metre away face-to-face for over an hour in the past 10 days — have been informed by managers.”

Kent’s Meningitis Crisis Continues

Kent is still battling its own meningitis outbreak with 29 suspected and confirmed cases so far. Eighteen cases are lab-confirmed, and 11 are under investigation. Two deaths have been confirmed, but no new fatalities have emerged since the latest update.

Orano’s spokesperson was clear:

“At this stage, no link has been established with the outbreak in England.”
