A tourist has been locked up for raping a teenage boy after luring him to a seaside property in Brighton.

How It Happened

The 17-year-old victim was sitting on a bench on Dyke Road when Rafael Nascimento, 38, approached him, asking where to buy cigarettes. Nascimento, a Brazilian tourist staying nearby, struck up a conversation and gained the boy’s trust. After leading the teen to a shop in the early hours, Nascimento took him back to a property in Regent Hill, where the horrific attack took place.

Swift Justice Stops Predator Flight

The victim reported the crime immediately, and police arrested Nascimento the very same day. Sussex Police revealed he was due to fly home to Brazil the next day — meaning he could have easily skipped the country before being caught.

Sentenced to 13 Years Behind Bars

Following a two-week trial at Lewes Crown Court in February, Nascimento was found guilty of four counts of rape and causing a person to engage in sexual activity. He was sentenced on April 17 to 13 years in prison.

Senior Investigating Officer Detective Chief Inspector Steve Cobbett said: “The victim’s courage and resilience were crucial in catching this dangerous predator. Had the offence not been reported quickly, Nascimento could have escaped justice by leaving the country. “While nothing can undo the trauma, we hope this sentence brings some closure and aids the victim’s healing. Sexual offences can happen to anyone, regardless of gender, yet offences against men remain under-reported due to fear and stigma.”
