First Hostages Freed as Israel-Hamas Ceasefire Kicks In
The Israeli military has confirmed the release of the first three hostages under a new ceasefire deal with Hamas. The hostages were handed over to the Red Cross and are now on their way back to Israeli forces. The truce came into effect at 11:15am local time on Sunday, January 19, 2025, marking a rare moment of calm after 15 brutal months of conflict.
Hostage Details: British-Israeli Among Those Freed
Among the freed is Emily Damari, 28, a British-Israeli woman abducted during the October 7 attack on her home at Kibbutz Kfar Aza. Her mother, Surrey-born Mandy Damari, revealed Emily was shot in the hand, blindfolded, and forced into a car alongside friends during the horrific assault.
Two other hostages were also identified: 24-year-old Romi Gonen, taken from the same kibbutz, and 31-year-old Doron Steinbrecher, abducted from the Supernova music festival.
Ceasefire Terms Offer Glimmer of Hope
The truce aims to set the stage for a wider peace deal and the release of dozens more captives. Key elements of the agreement include:
- A 42-day ceasefire to facilitate the return of 33 hostages in total
- Israel agreeing to release hundreds of Palestinian prisoners and detainees
- Israeli forces withdrawing to a buffer zone inside Gaza
- Displaced Palestinians allowed to return home
- Increased humanitarian aid to the devastated Gaza Strip
Fragile Start as Release Faces Delays
The ceasefire, brokered by the US, Qatar, and Egypt, hit a rocky patch when Hamas delayed the release of the first three female hostages by nearly three hours. Originally set for 8:30am, the handover was pushed back to 11:15am – a clear sign the peace deal is still on shaky ground.
Peace Still a Distant Dream but Families Cling to Hope
This is just the second ceasefire reached during the bloody conflict and raises hopes for an eventual resolution. Nearly 100 hostages remain in captivity since the violent October 7 attacks, making this breakthrough a crucial step forward for desperate families.
More updates on the ceasefire and further hostage releases are expected in the coming days.
