Mass Arrests as Violence Erupts at Westminster Palestine Protest
Chaos hit Westminster as police made mass arrests during a demonstration organised by Defend Our Juries, reportedly backing the proscribed group Palestine Action. The majority of those detained face charges for showing support under the Terrorism Act.
Violence Flares, Police Targeted
The protest quickly turned violent, with numerous officers assaulted. Police arrested 17 people on suspicion of attacking officers amid the disorder.
Staggering Number of Arrests
In total, police detained 857 protesters under Section 13 of the Terrorism Act 2000 for allegedly supporting Palestine Action. Another 33 were nabbed for separate offences, including assaults on police.
Following initial processing, 341 were released on bail with a summons to appear at police stations later. However, 519 remain in custody, including those refusing to give personal details or re-arrested while on bail.
Counter Terrorism Command Takes Charge
“Violence was planned by masked agitators aiming to cause chaos,” said Deputy Assistant Commissioner Claire Smart, praising officers for their professionalism amid abuse. She highlighted a peaceful Palestine Coalition march of 20,000 that same day, stressing supporters can express views lawfully without violence or breaking the law.”
All 858 detainees are under active investigation by Counter Terrorism Command as police probe the full scale of the disruption.
