Driver Caught Using Manager’s Tachograph Card on M62 — Faces Heavy Fine and Licence Review

A lorry driver has been fined £900 and handed an enforced 45-hour rest period after being caught illegally using his manager’s tachograph card while travelling on the M62.

Officers carrying out routine checks stopped the vehicle and quickly discovered the serious breach of transport regulations. The driver had been attempting to disguise his driving hours by using a tachograph card registered to his manager — a direct violation of UK and EU driving laws designed to ensure road safety.

In addition to the immediate fine and rest order, the case has been referred to the Traffic Commissioner, who will now consider revoking the operating company’s licence — a move that could have severe consequences for the business involved.

A police spokesperson said:
“Using another person’s tachograph card is a criminal offence and undermines vital safety regulations designed to prevent fatigue-related accidents. We take these matters extremely seriously, and appropriate enforcement action will be taken.”

The tachograph system records driving time, breaks, and rest periods to ensure drivers are not overworked and that safety is maintained on the UK’s roads. Breaches can lead not only to financial penalties but also licence revocations and, in some cases, criminal charges.

The Traffic Commissioner’s Office has not yet announced a date for a review hearing regarding the operating licence.

Motorists and logistics companies are reminded to ensure strict compliance with tachograph rules to avoid serious penalties.
