Frustration is mounting among drivers and local residents as a 50mph speed limit introduced between junctions 5 (Clacket Lane) and 7 (M23) on the M25 continues to cause delays, and could remain in place for up to 12 more weeks.
Although roadworks officially ended on April 23, National Highways has confirmed the reduced speed limit remains while post-project testing and system calibration takes place on the new smart motorway infrastructure.
National Highways explained that the speed limit is part of retrofitting and performance testing, stating:
“This can only happen when all lanes are open. Once the system meets our rigorous standards, the national speed limit will be restored.”
Additional overnight closures and diversions are expected as part of the ongoing work.
