M3 Motorway Southbound closed after fatal rush hour Collision Near Basingstoke

Police have closed the M3 southbound between Basingstoke south and Winchester, following a fatal collision which happened just after 6.30am this morning. Both lanes of the southbound carriageway are blocked. It is believed a vehicle collided with a tree and the driver was thrown from his vehicle then struck by another vehicle. The man was caught in a collision involving four vehicles on the M3 southbound carriageway between Winchester Services and Junction Eight for Andover. Details of the incident are unclear, but a spokesman from the ambulance service said that the man had “walked onto the carriageway” after a vehicle he was travelling in had stopped by the roadside. Police have launched an investigation, but have yet to confirm the circumstances surrounding the crash. A spokesman for South Central Ambulance Service said crews had been called at 6.32am following reports of a pedestrian having been struck by a vehicle on the carriageway. He said a car – containing the man and a woman – is believed to had gone off of the road. He added: “The man then got out of the car and walked onto the carriageway.
