Drivers are facing severe delays on the M6 after a lorry overturned early this morning, leading to the closure of multiple lanes near Greater Manchester. The incident occurred on the northbound carriageway in Cheshire between Junction 17 (Sandbach) and Junction 18 (Middlewich), with three lanes initially closed for approximately seven hours.
Emergency services, including firefighters, paramedics, and police, were deployed to the scene. One casualty was rescued by fire crews from the overturned vehicle. Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service confirmed that the individual sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was handed over to paramedics for further care.
Four fire engines and a major rescue unit attended the incident. A spokesperson for Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service stated:
“Crews were able to free the casualty and assess them on the scene. Police and Highways are also present as efforts continue to clear the motorway.”
The overturned lorry, which came to rest on the nearside barrier, has caused significant disruption. National Highways North West warned of “very slow” traffic, with congestion stretching back more than four miles and delays of up to 45 minutes. Work to clear the lorry and its load is ongoing.
