Default Heading H1
A new London airport is set to open in 2028 at the former Manston Airport site in Kent, following a £500 million redevelopment project. The revived facility will feature the 11th-longest civilian runway in the UK, stretching 2,748 metres (9,020 feet) — suitable for cargo jets and low-cost short-haul aircraft.
The project is being led by RiverOak Strategic Partners, which has owned the site since 9 July 2019. The company’s aim is to transform the historic site into a modern aviation hub, capable of serving both freight operators and budget airlines flying to European destinations.
From RAF Stronghold to Civilian Revival
Manston Airport, once a key RAF base, played a pivotal role during both World Wars. Located on the Isle of Thanet in Kent, the airfield’s strategic location and expansive runway made it a critical military asset.
The airport ceased commercial operations in May 2014, following an announcement of closure earlier that month. It has remained inactive ever since, despite multiple efforts to revive it.
RiverOak Plans Low-Cost Carrier Comeback
Tony Freudmann, main board director at RiverOak Strategic Partners, told the UKNIP that the airport is being reimagined as a dual-use site for freight logistics and budget holiday travel.
“We’re in talks with several short-haul carriers and see strong demand for low-cost flights to Europe,” said Freudmann.
“We believe Manston can play a vital role in the UK’s airport capacity strategy — especially post-Brexit and post-pandemic.”
Focus on Freight and Jobs
The £500m investment is also expected to create thousands of local jobs and bolster the UK’s cargo-handling capacity. With growing pressure on London’s existing airports, Manston could relieve congestion by handling freight destined for southeast England and beyond.
Construction is already underway on refurbished terminal facilities, cargo logistics zones, and runway enhancements.
