A vibrant new mural of Paddington Bear has arrived at London’s South Bank, celebrating the nation’s beloved bear ahead of the new film Paddington in Peru, which opens in cinemas on November 8. The mural, located on Sutton Walk near the Southbank Centre, features Paddington donning his iconic red hat and stands as a warm welcome to visitors arriving in the capital.
Created by Peruvian artist Gisella Stapleton in collaboration with Studio Canal, Global Street Art, and South Bank, the mural marks Paddington’s recent appointment as Visit London’s first-ever “welcome ambassador.” Inspired by the Retablo Ayacuchano, a traditional Andean art form, Stapleton’s artwork captures the essence of Paddington’s journey from Peru to London, representing the heart of every immigrant and the welcoming spirit of the city.

Simon McCaugherty, Director at VisitLondon.com, shared his enthusiasm: “We are over the moon to name Paddington as Visit London’s first official welcome ambassador. Paddington has long called London his home and is the perfect representative of London’s values as a welcoming and inclusive city. As Paddington himself said, ‘in London everyone is different, and that means anyone can fit in.’”
Actor Ben Whishaw, the voice of Paddington, attended the mural unveiling last month, further boosting excitement for the new film and Paddington’s new role.
Stapleton, who has lived in London for 13 years, shared her connection to the piece: “Inspired by the Retablo Ayacuchano, this image represents the heart of Paddington – and the heart of every immigrant. For me, living in London has been an enriching experience; it is a magical city where I have always felt that I fit in.”
Fans and visitors can find the mural just a short walk from Waterloo Station, providing a colorful new backdrop perfect for photos and a fitting tribute to Michael Bond’s iconic character, first introduced in 1958.
