Police Launch Probe After Blaze Leaves Pensioner in Hospital

A fire at a mid-terraced house converted into flats on Brookhill Road, Woolwich, has left a pensioner in hospital. Eight fire engines and around 60 firefighters were dispatched to tackle the blaze, which broke out early this morning (October 12).

The fire, which engulfed a second-floor flat, saw two people treated on the scene by the London Ambulance Service. Firefighters were first alerted to the fire at 3.52 am, with crews from Plumstead, Greenwich, East Greenwich, and surrounding stations responding. The fire was brought under control within two hours.
One of the London Fire Brigade’s 32-metre turntable ladders was deployed as an observation tower to help fight the fire from above. The cause of the blaze is currently under investigation.

The pensioner, who has lived in the home all his life, remains in the hospital. His brother and sister were comforted by firefighters at the scene and reassured that everything possible was being done to determine the cause of the fire.
