Met Office Forecasts First Snowfall of the Year as Autumn Sets In

Britain is in the grip of a savage Arctic blast as blizzards roar in with an amber Met Office snow warning. Temperatures have plunged to a bone-chilling 12C, forcing major roads to shut and leaving hundreds of drivers trapped overnight.

Amber and Yellow Warnings Hit Hard

  • Up to 10 inches (25cm) of snow expected on high ground, especially the North York Moors
  • Amber warning in force until 9pm tonight for the worst-hit areas
  • Five yellow warnings cover North East England coast, Cornwall, Devon, and western Wales until midnight
  • Additional alerts for Northern Ireland until midday and northern Scotland until 9pm

Travel Chaos and Power Blackouts Loom

Heavy sleet and snow showers battered UK coasts this morning. The worst-affected regions face travel chaos and possible power outages as thick snow piles up. Motorists in the North East endured treacherous conditions overnight.

North Yorkshire Police urged drivers to steer clear of the A171 near Whitby after numerous vehicles got stuck. The A169 between Whitby and Pickering was closed due to whiteout conditions.

Hundreds of Motorists Stranded, Schools Shutdown

In Scotland, the snowstorm shut 190 schools and nurseries in Aberdeenshire. The A90 between Cleanhill and Stonehaven remains closed amid hazardous conditions.

Scenes From the Freeze

The North East woke to an icy landscape: overturned cars, snow-covered fields, and relentless snow ploughs battling through drifts. The brutal blast has taken hold, with residents bracing for a long, cold day.
