Snow has blanketed parts of Britain today, with up to four inches falling in some areas as temperatures plummeted below freezing. Weather warnings were issued as the UK experienced its first significant snowfall of the season. Areas from Cornwall to the Scottish Highlands saw snow settle, causing hazardous road conditions.
Police in County Durham reported road crashes due to snowy conditions, and the Met Office warned of slippery roads and the risk of falls. The wintry weather is expected to continue into the weekend, with temperatures as low as -8°C (18°F) in some areas. As a result of the cold snap, London Mayor Sadiq Khan activated a “severe weather emergency protocol” to provide accommodation for rough sleepers.
