A bicycle reported stolen from Potters Bar railway station has been successfully returned to its owner thanks to the quick thinking and vigilance of local neighbourhood police officers.

The bike was stolen four days prior when officers, while attending an unrelated matter, spotted a bicycle they suspected had been taken without the owner’s consent. Acting on their instincts, the officers recovered the bike and launched a series of enquiries to identify its rightful owner.

A spokesperson from the local policing team said:

“We’re always pleased to reunite stolen property with its owner, and in this case, our officers’ attentiveness made all the difference.”

Police are now urging cyclists to register their bikes on the Bike Register database, the UK’s national cycle database.

“Registering your bicycle not only helps in recovery if it’s ever stolen, but also acts as a deterrent to thieves,” the spokesperson added. “Bikes with registration markings are harder to sell and easier to trace.”
