These Potholes are getting a bit out of Control
Coastguard Rescue Teams from Padstow and Newquay were called after a man fell at a roundhole at Trevone. The man who was with a group, fell 20 feet while exploring. A second person who was with him, stayed with the man who was hurt in the fall. A cliff rescue technician from the Padstow Coastguard Rescue team was lowered to the scene and made a rapid assessment of the casualty condition quickly requesting a paramedic from South West Ambulance Service be lowered to the injured man and his friend using what’s called an assisted descent. An assessment was made of the situation and it was decided that the injured man could not be recovered using cliff rescue by the Coastguard Rescue Team. HM Coastguard’s Aeronautical Rescue Coordination Centre (ARCC) sent in the Newquay search and rescue helicopter. The man was winched aboard the helicopter and flown to Derriford Hospital, where we wish him a speedy recovery. The man’s friend and the paramedic were brought back up by the Coastguard Rescue Team’s cliff technicians. Phil Davies, senior coastal operations officer, said: ‘We always advise people not to attempt to self-rescue in these circumstances. This man’s friend did exactly the right thing by just staying with him while the alarm was raised. ‘It’s also worth reminding people that while our coastline is beautiful, it can also be very dangerous. Weather conditions of late have meant cliff paths are slippery and in some places crumbling away. Make sure you’re equipped for every eventuality if you are out and take extra care.
