Three Dead, Child Seriously Injured in South Gloucestershire Crash — Motorway Remains Closed in Both Directions

A devastating single-vehicle collision on the M5 motorway has claimed the lives of three people, including a teenager, while a fourth occupant — a child — is in hospital with serious injuries.

The crash occurred at approximately 9:00pm on Friday, 30 May, when a white BMW left the northbound carriageway between junction 14 (Falfield) and Michaelwood Services. The vehicle was carrying a family of four.

M5 Closed in Both Directions

As a result of the collision, the M5 remains closed in both directions between junctions 14 and 13 (Stroud). Emergency services have been on site throughout the night and into Saturday morning.

Recovery and forensic collision investigation work is ongoing, and National Highways will need to assess the carriageway for structural damage before the motorway can be reopened. Police estimate the closure will remain in place for several more hours.

Victims and Investigation

Two adults in their 40s and one teenage child died at the scene. A second child, who was also in the BMW, was taken to hospital with serious injuries.

Inspector Mark Vicary, of the Avon and Somerset roads policing unit, said:

“Our thoughts first and foremost are with the child in hospital and loved ones who have received the most awful news overnight. A specially-trained officer will provide them with support at this difficult time.”

He continued:

“Emergency services have worked throughout the night at what has proved to be a very complex scene. They have worked diligently and professionally to try to save life in the most tragic of circumstances.”

Public Urged to Avoid Area

Inspector Vicary acknowledged the disruption to travel during the half-term getaway, but stressed the need for continued closure:

“We appreciate this closure is causing delays and disruption… but given the severity of this distressing incident, we hope the public can understand the reasons why this is necessary and ask them to consider alternative travel plans.”

Witness Appeal

Police are urging witnesses or anyone with dashcam footage of the incident to come forward. Anyone with information should contact Avon and Somerset Police via 101, quoting reference 5225151145.
