A major traffic disruption has hit commuters this morning after a serious three-vehicle collision near Swanley. The crash, which occurred around 6:00 AM on Wednesday, 16th October 2024, has led to the closure of a 16-mile stretch of the M20 motorway, a key route linking the M25 and M26.

Firefighters from Kent Fire and Rescue, equipped with specialist Lukas cutting tools, conducted a side extrication to free the driver of a Smart car involved in the accident. The fire brigade responded with three fire engines, working alongside Kent Police and the South East Coast Ambulance Service at the scene.

Traffic has been halted in both directions between Junction 1 for the M25 and Junction 3 for the M26, with the coast-bound entry slip-road blocked. Motorists have been advised to avoid the area, as long delays are expected. Congestion stretches across the QE2 bridge and is causing significant tailbacks on the A20 Swanley bypass and throughout Swanley town centre.

A spokesperson for Kent Fire and Rescue Service confirmed their attendance:
“Kent Fire and Rescue Service has three fire engines in attendance, assisting Kent Police and South East Coast Ambulance Service.”

Kent Police have also issued a statement:
“Our patrols are at the scene of a serious collision involving three cars on the slip road from Junction 3 on the M25 towards the coastbound M20.”
The collision investigation unit is expected to be on-site until at least 2:00 PM to conduct scans and gather evidence, with the closure remaining in place for the time being.
Drivers are urged to find alternative routes, as delays could continue well into the afternoon. Updates on the road’s reopening will follow as the investigation progresses.
