Massive Drug Haul Seized
The National Crime Agency (NCA) uncovered nearly a ton of cocaine worth around £75 million hidden inside banana crates at Southampton Docks. The container had journeyed all the way from Nicaragua, passing through Panama before reaching the UK.
Two Men Charged After Border Force Alert
Border Force officers, working with the NCA, intercepted the shipment and discovered 943kg of Class A drugs mixed in with pallets of bananas. Last night, two men were arrested and charged with importing Class A substances.
- Daniel Dumitru, 37, from Smethwick, West Midlands
- Andrew Smyth, 46, from Prenton, Merseyside
Both are due to appear at Southampton Magistrates’ Court today (Thursday, 19 March).
NCA Warns of Community Harm
NCA Branch Commander Saju Sasikumar said: “This is a massive amount of cocaine which was destined for the streets of the UK. The supply of Class A drugs badly damages society by bringing violence and addiction to our communities. Seizing these drugs deprives the crime group behind the importation of huge profits that cannot be ploughed back into further offending.”
This major bust highlights the ongoing fight against drug trafficking through UK ports, aiming to protect communities from the devastating effects of drug crime.
