A popular children’s educational toy, the My Living World Worm World Kit, has been urgently recalled across the UK amid serious health concerns. Fears have erupted that the sand included in the kit might contain dangerous asbestos fibres.

Danger in the Dirt: Asbestos Found in Kids’ Soil Kit

The kit, which lets kids watch earthworms wriggle through layers of sand and soil, was sold between November 2022 and February 2026. Manufactured in China, it has quickly turned toxic in the spotlight.

  • Product Number: LW102C
  • Risk: Potential asbestos contamination in sand vials
  • Health Hazard: Asbestos is banned in the UK for its risk even at tiny exposure levels

Wiltshire Trading Standards issued the recall after tests revealed the sand does not meet UK safety laws under the General Product Safety Regulations 2005.

What You Need to Do Now

Manufacturers Playmonster and distributors TJ Jones and Hobbycraft have pulled the product. More sellers could be added to the recall list.

If you own the kit, stop using it immediately and keep it away from children.

  • If unopened: Seal the sand in a heavy-duty plastic bag, double tape it, label clearly, and store safely.
  • If used: Clean affected areas with wet cloths to avoid dust. Wear gloves and a mask during cleaning.
  • Double-bag used cloths, gloves, and masks before disposing of them.
  • Keep children and others away from contamination zones until cleaning is complete.

Refunds and Disposal

Customers who bought the kit from Hobbycraft can return sand vials to any store for a full refund. If visiting a store isn’t possible, follow the safe disposal instructions and contact Hobbycraft to arrange a refund.

The contaminated product can be thrown in general household waste or returned to the relevant retailer, according to the distributor’s policy.

“Stop using the kit immediately and keep it out of reach of children,” advises Wiltshire Trading Standards.
