A man has pleaded guilty to the attempted murder of a lone woman he viciously attacked with a broken bottle in Headingley High Street. The shocking, random assault happened on what would have been the first day of his trial.
Unprovoked Bottle Attack Near Original Oak Pub
The victim was walking past the Original Oak pub in Leeds in March 2024 after dining nearby when Ibrahim Albashir launched his brutal attack without any warning. Despite witnesses rushing to intervene, Albashir continued his frenzied assault and only stopped when members of the public physically restrained him.
Had bystanders not stepped in, the assault could easily have been fatal.
Strong Evidence Seals Albashir’s Guilt
Prosecutors built an ironclad case using the victim’s testimony, multiple witness statements, medical reports, and CCTV footage from nearby buses. An expert medical witness confirmed Albashir was fully fit and capable of forming the intent to murder at the time of the attack. The assault was deliberate, repetitive, and carried out with clear awareness of his actions.
Justice Pending: Albashir’s Sentencing Set for June
Albashir will be sentenced at Leeds Crown Court on 16 June 2026.
Senior Crown Prosecutor Aamir Sajad said: “This was a terrifying and entirely unprovoked attack on a young woman walking home after an evening out.
“Ibrahim Albashir deliberately targeted her and inflicted serious injuries that could easily have killed her. It is testimony to the bravery of the witnesses who intervened that she is still alive today.
“Albashir initially sought to avoid responsibility for his violent actions, but we worked closely with West Yorkshire Police to present clear evidence he knew exactly what he was doing.
“I hope today’s outcome brings some comfort to the victim and shows the CPS will always prosecute those who commit violence against women and girls.”
