Fiery Argument Ends in Deadly Stabbing

Aurin Makepeace plunged a knife into 41-year-old Steven Rothwell multiple times at his flat on Cross Street, Macclesfield, in August 2025. The brutal attack came after a heated row between the ex-partners, who had met in prison and stayed in touch despite splitting up in 2023.

The explosive clash erupted when Steven found out about an ex-girlfriend’s betrayal during Makepeace’s stay at his flat. After a police visit triggered by a public fight, Makepeace fatally stabbed Steven in the chest later that same evening — then stayed at the scene overnight.

Victim’s Final Hours and Makepeace’s Web of Lies

  • Makepeace admitted to friends, “I’ve murdered my boyfriend.”
  • The next night, she dialled 999 claiming self-defence, giving a false name: “Katie.”
  • Officers found Steven dead with a fatal stab wound, concealed under a yellow blanket.
  • Makepeace had already fled back to North Wales by the time she called the police.

Forensics revealed that Steven died within ten minutes of the stabbing. His blood was on the murder weapon, mixed with Makepeace’s DNA on the handle. The jury rejected her story that it was an accidental struggle.

Detective Blasts Makepeace’s Deception

“Makepeace’s lies simply don’t add up. She waited hours before alerting police and gave a fake name. We tracked her buying sweets and vodka before catching the train out to North Wales. Despite the mountain of evidence, she pleaded not guilty, dragging Steven’s family through needless pain,” said Detective Inspector Simon Mills. “The jury saw through her deception. She will pay for her violent crime.”

Family Honour Steven Rothwell’s Memory

“We thank the judge, jury, and police for delivering justice. Steven was resilient, mischievous, and kind-hearted. He loved literature and treasured quiet moments in coffee shops and libraries,” said Steven’s family. “His strength and sharp wit will be forever missed.”
