Nearly 60 firefighters tackled a fierce blaze at a shop with flats above on Southwark Park Road, Bermondsey, last night (March 25).
Child Rescued, No Injuries Reported
A child was safely evacuated from a third-floor flat using a fire escape hood. Thankfully, no injuries were reported.
Shop Destroyed, Flat Partially Damaged
The ground-floor shop was gutted by the fire, while a small part of a first-floor flat suffered damage. London Fire Brigade has launched an investigation to find the cause.
Firefighters Praise Swift Rescue Efforts
Station Commander Tony Perks said: “Initial crews faced a very intense fire on arrival and worked swiftly to bring it under control and ensure residents in flats above the shop were safe.”
He added that road closures remain in place and urged the public to avoid the area for several hours as crews continue their work.

- Teams from Dockhead, Old Kent Road, Deptford, New Cross, Peckham, Dowgate, Whitechapel and nearby stations tackled the blaze.
- The fire was brought under control shortly after 7 pm.
- Fire escape hoods, introduced after the Grenfell Tower disaster, helped protect the child from toxic smoke during rescue.
