Fugitive Caught After Over a Decade
Mark Robert Witchell, 61, from Nantwich, has been jailed for 10 years after fleeing to Brazil for 14 years to dodge justice. The notorious crime boss orchestrated a luxury car theft ring and ran a lucrative online drugs operation worth an estimated £3.7 million.
Luxury Cars Stolen Using Hire Purchase Fraud
Between 2003 and 2006, Witchell masterminded the theft of high-end cars like Mercedes and Porsches across Staffordshire, with stolen vehicles valued over £280,000. Using fake hire purchase agreements, he gained access to these luxury motors before orchestrating their theft.
Online Drug Dealing Empire Exposed
From 2013 to 2015, Witchell led a sophisticated network supplying illegal medicines and drugs online. The Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) revealed he directed three UK-based associates to sell the drugs, racking up massive profits totaling roughly £3.7 million.
Police Bring Down Crime Network
Witchell was finally arrested at Holyhead Port in August 2025. Several of his accomplices were also caught and sentenced earlier in March 2023. Detective Constable Gareth Reynolds from Staffordshire’s Economic Crime Unit said:
“This was a highly sophisticated criminal operation which generated millions by exploiting vulnerable people and stealing their property. Despite spending 14 years on the run, Witchell couldn’t escape justice. This case highlights the scale of organised crime preying on local communities, and we remain determined to tackle it every day.”
