The witness added: “It wasn’t until 7.10am that we were told to move down to deck three to wait for the rescue boat.

“And there, we had to jostle and wait from around 7.20am to 9.20am before we could board the rescue boat.”

She also said: “Four hours of cold, wet, exhaustion and fatigue.

“Some [people] also suffered from smoke and difficulty breathing.”

Another passenger told Shin Min Daily News: “Many passengers were frightened and ran out… The scene was noisy and chaotic.”

He added that he saw thick smoke billowing from the upper deck of the ship, and reported smelling burning.

The fire is understood to have started in the lounge area on deck nine of the ship.

Social media footage showed scores of passengers wearing safety vests as they waited to disembark the huge vessel.

Local authorities in Singapore said: “The deceased crew member, an Indonesian national, has been transferred ashore.

“The relevant authorities are handling the necessary follow-up, and the Indonesian embassy in Singapore has been informed.
