Border Force Busts Dangerous Drug Shipment

A drug dealer has been slammed behind bars after bungling an attempt to import a stash of Class A drugs. On September 26, 2023, UK Border Force intercepted a suspicious parcel bound for Darlington. Inside were over 250 MDMA tablets and 250 LSD tabs – a serious haul of illegal substances.

Police Crackdown Leads to Dramatic Arrest

The North East Regional Organised Crime Unit (NEROCU), backed by the National Crime Agency (NCA), sprang into action following the seizure. On November 9, officers raided two addresses linked to Matthew Smith, 35, in Darlington.

During the swoop, police uncovered more cocaine, MDMA, LSD, ketamine, and even a police-style baton. Smith was swiftly arrested and hauled before the courts.

Nine-Year Jail Sentence for Crime Spree

Smith faced nine serious charges, from importing and supplying Class A drugs to possession and evading export restrictions. He pleaded guilty at Peterlee Magistrates’ Court last October.

On February 27, he was handed a hefty prison term of nine years and six months.

Detective Sergeant Neil Lovat of NEROCU said: “This case shows the power of teamwork in cutting down serious crime. Class A drugs wreak havoc in communities, fuelling violence and funding horrific crimes like child abuse and slavery. Under Operation Sentinel, we’re united in hunting down criminals and keeping the public safe.”
