Around 1,000 revellers at a Hindu Holi festival in Harrow faced chaos last week after up to 20 youths stormed the event, hurling glass bottles and beer cans before fleeing police. Only one teenager was arrested despite the violent scenes.

Peace Turns to Mayhem at Harrow Civic Centre

The disruption happened on the evening of 3 March outside Harrow Civic Centre during the International Siddhashram Shakti Centre’s annual Holi celebration. Everything was calm until just after 8.30pm when three teens switched off the sound system and smashed the speakers to the ground.

Founder Shri Rajrajeshwar Guruji recalled the terrifying moments that followed. “Five minutes later, they came back with 15 to 20 boys, some wearing balaclavas. They threw beer cans into the fire, hurled glass bottles, and knocked over barriers. Our Sikh security guard tried to intervene, but they tried to attack him. They came looking for a fight, and we were defending ourselves. It spiralled out of control, so we called the police.”

Police Response Under Fire

The gang scattered when sirens wailed. Worshippers caught one youth, a 14-year-old boy, who was handed to police and arrested on suspicion of affray shortly after 9pm. Fortunately, no injuries were reported.
Harrow councillor Susan Hall added: “The Hindu community here are peace-loving, gentle folk. This attack on their festival is outrageous.”

Met Police Silent on Further Action

The Metropolitan Police confirmed only the single arrest and has issued no updates on whether more suspects will be charged. The investigation remains ongoing, with the community demanding justice and reassurance after a night that shattered a beloved cultural event.
