Man Locked Up After Violent Hotel Assault on Ex
Jamie Mewis has been sentenced to 21 months behind bars after brutally grabbing his ex-partner by the neck during a furious hotel showdown in Derby.
Attack Sparks Trauma and Fear
The terrifying incident happened in August 2024 when the couple argued over messages found on Mewis’ phone. Furious at the discovery, his ex-partner said she was leaving — but he reacted violently, grabbing her neck and throwing her onto the bed.
After releasing his grip, the woman collapsed and hit her head on a wall. She fled to the hotel reception, where staff quickly called the police. Mewis escaped the scene but was caught three days later.
Victim’s Brave Statement: ‘My Life’s Been Turned Upside Down’
“Since Jamie assaulted me, it has completely turned my life upside down. I have been left with physical and mental trauma, including severe depression, borderline personality disorder and PTSD. I barely leave the house and do not do group sessions with friends. There is no sentence that can improve my health but I do not want this to happen to anyone else and I am hopeful that after Jamie is sentenced, I can find closure at last.”
Court Sends Clear Message: No Contact for 10 Years
Mewis, 36, from Hill Crest Road, Derby, initially denied charges of intentional strangulation and assault. He later pleaded guilty to assault occasioning actual bodily harm as part of a plea deal.
A judge at Derby Crown Court handed him 21 months in jail and slapped on a 10-year restraining order banning any contact with the victim.
Police Praise Victim’s Courage
Detective Staff Investigator David Wright said: “Mewis is a violent offender who caused this woman to fear for her life. The consequences of his behaviour are still hitting her hard mentally, even after the physical wounds have healed.
I want to praise her courage for reporting this and seeing the case through. Her bravery in giving evidence pushed this case forward and forced Mewis to accept a guilty plea.
