Police and Highways have confirmed that the collision’s impact was severe, with vehicle wreckage scattered across all four lanes of the M25, indicating the magnitude of the incident.

Tragically, at least one person has been reported dead, though emergency services are yet to confirm the total number of casualties.

A forensic investigation has been launched to piece together the events that led to the crash. The section of the M25 affected by the incident has been closed to traffic, with drivers being advised to seek alternative routes to avoid delays.

We have reached out to Herts Police for More information they have refused to issue any statement concerning the incident that is understood to be supervised by the IOPC.

UPDATE: 11:.14am: Statement from Herts Police:

The M25 is currently closed between junctions 22 (London Colney) and 21A (North Orbital Road/St Albans). This is while emergency services deal with a serious road traffic collision.

Motorists are asked to avoid the area as the road is expected to remain closed for some time. We would like to thank the public for their patience. We will update further as more information becomes available.

A Spokesman for the IOPC in a statement said: “We are investigating the police actions before a fatal road traffic collision on the M25 earlier today.

We understand around 4am this morning (Sunday 4 February) Hertfordshire Constabulary were in pursuit of a van before the van was involved in a collision.

“The incident, involving three other vehicles, was between Watford and St Albans. No police vehicles were involved in the collision and the pursuit had been stood down before the collision.

“We sent our investigators to the scene and to the post-incident procedure to begin the process of gathering information.

“Our investigation is in the very early stages.”
