Serial Thief Jailed for Preying on Elderly Shoppers Across Surrey

A notorious thief who targeted vulnerable elderly shoppers in a series of distraction thefts across Surrey and nearby counties has finally been locked up for over two years.

Claudiu Marcu Busted After £40K Theft Spree

Claudiu Marcu, 51, from London, was sentenced to two years and four months at St Albans Crown Court on 19 June 2025. He pleaded guilty to conspiracy to steal, multiple theft charges, and fraud by false representation.

From November 2024 to February 2025, Marcu struck inside supermarkets, using sneaky distraction tricks to rob wallets, purses, and handbags from elderly victims. He then used the stolen bank cards to make fraudulent withdrawals and purchases, with losses topping £40,000.

Crackdown After Joint Police Sting

Marcu’s crime spree ended with his arrest in Hertfordshire on 18 March 2025. The operation was a joint effort between Hertfordshire Constabulary and the Metropolitan Police.

Police pieced together the case using CCTV footage, witness statements, and forensic evidence, revealing the full scale of Marcu’s offending.
